Snowballs on Steps

The site for this temporary installation was a prominent outdoor staircase on the University of Virginia campus. After a snowfall on the afternoon of January 24, 2013, my painting students and I created an evanescent work of public art. We made carefully crafted snowballs and arranged them in a grid pattern on the steps of the staircase. Children, especially, appreciated our installation and loved to run up and down the steps. After we completed the grid of snowballs, one child made her own matching snowballs and used them to create a small “snowman of the stair.”
