Stories of Ivy Road: Found Objects, Portraits, Conversations

To create this artwork, I collaborated with my colleague, Professor Phoebe Crisman, and 15 undergraduate students at UVA. The work celebrates the diversity of life along a commercial strip of Ivy Road in Charlottesville, Virginia. Two vertical, L-shaped, black planes, each with its own window, define a rectangular space, while a third horizontal black plane holds the evidence of the street: washed, ironed, and cleaned fragments such as broken bottles, toys, car parts, and lottery tickets. Along with taped interviews and black-and-white portraits of passers-by, these recovered fragments paint a picture of the consumption and personal behaviors of people inhabiting the street. The artwork was on display at the Jefferson School City Center in Charlottesville, VA, in January 2015.
